How to Hire A Home Remodeling Contractor

Re-modeling your home can be easy or a nightmare depending on your prior preparation.

  1. Step 1

    1. Decide on what work you want to have done in your home

  2. Step 2

    2. Interview different (at least 3) contractors

  3. Step 3

    3. Get copies of the insurance and business license

  4. Step 4

    4. Ask for references and call each one. don't make the mistake of not calling.

  5. Step 5

    5. Review the work with each contractor. Be sure each contractor gets the same information so you know each quotes is for the same work.

  6. Step 6

    6. Give the contractors time (at least a week) to get back to you. This also give you time to check references.

  7. Step 7

    7. Call back the contractor that gives you the best bid. Remember the lowest isn’t always the best.

  8. Step 8

    8. Review the work with the contractor you choose.

  9. Step 9

    9. Get a time schedule and estimate in writing. Keep in mind that the estimate can change due to unforeseen issues or problems.

  10. Step 10

    10. Only pay a percentage of the total amount. This is usually 1/3. Never pay the full price up front.

  11. Step 11

    11. Stay on top of the project unless you will be away. If so, have a friend check on the jobs progress and stay in touch with the contractor by phone.

  12. Step 12

    Contact your building department immediately if you experience any problems with the contractor not showing.
