Your college library is much more than the sum of its books.
Your college library is much more than the sum of its books.

Your college library is more than just a roomful of books; it can be a source of entertainment, a place to be loud without embarrassing yourself, and a place to gather with friends. When you don’t want to study but you don’t feel like leaving campus, head to your college library and use it for all it’s worth.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use your college library to check out free movies and CDs. Although library media collections lean toward educational over entertaining, many awesome movies and albums are considered both. You may not be able to get the latest action flick, but you should be able to work your way through the Criterion Collection.

  2. Step 2

Check out the displays and exhibits. College libraries set up informational displays on themes ranging from model trains to award-winning authors. The next time you have half an hour to kill, use your library like a mini-museum.

  3. Step 3

Use a practice room to make some noise. College libraries have soundproof rooms for music students, groups and speech-givers to practice without disturbing other students. You can use your college library to take up the banjo or start a hip-hop group.

  4. Step 4

Use your college library’s subscriptions to software you can’t afford. If you’ve always wanted to play around with photo or video editing software without buying the package, there’s a good chance your college library has some sweet stuff installed on the computers.

  5. Step 5

Utilize high-end equipment. Some college libraries have electronic equipment for students to check out for special projects. You may need a professor to sign off on it, but your library may have a digital camera or slide projector you can check out for an afternoon.

  6. Step 6

Get crazy on the photocopy machines. Ever wanted to make 17 copies of your left hand? College libraries have photocopy machines where, if you’re really bored (or ambitious), you can make copy collage art or animal rights pamphlets.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you check out video or audio equipment from the library, make sure you return it on time. Late fees for equipment are much steeper than for books.
  • Some college libraries will have the Registrar’s Office put a hold on releasing your grades or degree until you pay fines. Make sure you know your library’s policy before you “lose” that CD.
