Planning is key so you don't get locked out of your car.

Every year, the American Automobile Association (AAA) helps millions of motorists who have locked themselves out of their vehicles. Newer vehicles compound the problem. While today's high tech theft deterrents provide greater protection against theft, they also make entry more difficult when keys are not available. The solution? Planning is key.

Instructions

    • 1

You should already be in the habit of putting on your seat belt every time you get behind the wheel. Strive to also get into the habit of checking for your keys every time you exit your car or before you close the trunk.

    • 2

Don't set your keys down on the seat, in the trunk, or elsewhere in the vehicle.

    • 3

Carry keys in your shirt or pants pocket instead of in a jacket. Jackets can be set down in your car or trunk and locked inside the vehicle.

    • 4

Make sure your keys are in hand before closing the trunk lid if you carry a purse and are in the habit of locking it in the trunk rather than taking it with you

    • 5

Keep a plastic credit card-type key or spare key in your wallet, purse or briefcase.

    • 6

Give an extra set of keys to a family member or to a friend who is traveling with you. Keep a spare set of keys at work or at a place you visit frequently.

    • 7

Roll down the driver's side window if for some reason you must leave the key in the ignition.

Tips & Warnings

  • Write down your key and/or vehicle identification on a piece of paper and carry it in your wallet or purse. This will make it easier to obtain a replacement key.

  • Take your key out of the ignition and with you when filling your gas tank, airing up your tires or adding oil.
