How to Survive Post Peak Oil

How to Survive Post Peak Oil thumbnail
The world cannot rely on oil as energy source forever.

In the theorized post peak oil environment, the world's oil production reaches its saturation point, leaving the world with an energy crisis that threatens its oil-dependent way of life. You can ensure your family survives post peak oil only if you are well-prepared, creative and able to adapt to a different way of life. While many economists and oil industry leaders debate the peak oil theory, localized gas shortages throughout the years show that a fuel shortage, however brief, disrupts life, drastically at times. Take steps to prepare for a peak oil world by equipping your family and community to survive post peak oil.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a emergency preparedness kit that includes medical supplies, including medicine, for each family member.

    • 2

Make a plan to survive post peak oil based on your current situation. If you live on several acres of land within a short distance to a town or community, you may be able to produce much of your own food and necessities during an oil shortage. However, if you live in a suburban setting, or in an apartment complex, you may need to make drastic changes.

    • 3

Prepare to survive the peak oil times. Your family should work toward a more sustainable way of life and away from consumerism. Conduct a family meeting to get all household members on board with preparations for peak oil. Add solar panels to your home and invest in other renewable resources.

    • 4

Establish or obtain transportation fallback options in the case of prohibitively expensive fuel. Establish alternative transportation methods for getting to work and grocery stores. Consider whether you need to move to a more sustainable location, work from home or buy horses or bicycles for local travel.

    • 5

Establish a method to produce and store your own food in case of food shortages. Stockpile a few months' worth of dry goods for your family, including grains, beans, salt and honey. You will be better able to survive post peak oil if you can prepare foods from the basics: dried beans, rice and grains. Store food for short-term needs, including freeze-dried food.

    • 6

Establish a way to store water or to access your well without electricity (such as a hand pump). Having adequate water is crucial to surviving any emergency, long or short.

Tips & Warnings

  • Surround yourself with a good community. Get to know your neighbors; community will be essential during a peak oil crisis.

  • Learn basic emergency preparedness skills to help in any crisis.

I like how you've summed it up. Although each step could practically have a whole topic to itself. It really does get the brain ticking.
