Transferring a domain name is easy . . . it's just information you don't need very often. This article demystifies the process of transferring domains from Network Solutions to eNom.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A domain registered at Network Solutions
  • Your login and password for your Network Solutions account
  • Login and password information for your account at eNom, eNomCentral, or YouStart (accounts are free at all three sites)

Step1
Verify that the domain name is eligible for transfer -- that is, that the name has been registered for at least 60 days, is not expired, and is not in "client update prohibited" status.
Step2
To obtain the authorization code for the domain you want to transfer, call Network Solutions' 24-hour support line at 888-642-9675 and request the authorization code.
Step3
To confirm that the contact information for the domain is up-to-date, log on to your account as NetworkSolutions.com.
Step4
Click "Edit Account Contacts".
Step5
Click the account name for which you want to confirm contact information.
Step6
In the "Edit WHOIS Contacts" section, click "View/Edit WHOIS Contacts".
Step7
Select the check box next to the domain name you want to transfer, and click "Continue".
Step8
If the Administrative contact information (particularly the email address) needs to be updated, select the "Administrative Contact" option and click "Continue".
Step9
Follow the instructions to update the contact information. When you have successfully completed the update, the interface displays a confirmation.
Step10
Repeat for the Registrant contact information.
Step11
To unlock the domain name, click the domain name you want to unlock.
Step12
In the "Domain Details" section, click "Edit".
Step13
Select "Turn Domain Protect Off" and click "Save".
Step14
Now you're ready to create the transfer request at eNom.
Step15
Log on to your account at eNom, eNomCentral, or YouStart.
Step16
In the "DOMAINS" menu, click "transfer a domain name".
Step17
Select "Auto verification" and click "next".
Step18
Type in the domain name you want to transfer, a comma, a space, and then the authorization code. If you have more domains, hit "Enter" and type in the information for the next domain on a new line. Repeat for each domain you're transferring, one per line.
Step19
Set the Registrar Lock, Auto-Renew, Whois, and Password options as you wish.
Step20
Click "next".
Step21
Click "submit".
Step22
When you (or the Whois contacts listed at Network Solutions) receive the email from eNom asking for approval of the transfer, do so by following the instructions in the email.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are a few unscrupulous businesses that "hijack" names -- transfer unlocked domains to themselves, effectively stealing them. Once you unlock your name, it's advisable to submit the transfer request at eNom quickly, to reduce the time window for any potential hijackers.
  • Make sure the transfer email that you approve is eNom's, not from one of these hijackers!
