Getting back into your boat after a capsize is a matter of upper body strength, agility and practice. Using various reentry assistant devices, such as a rescue sling or a paddle-float can make the process easier. Read on to learn how to use a rescue sling for reentry.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paddle float
  • Rescue sling
  • Paddling equipment
  1. Step 1

Hold onto your boat at all times. Whether this means looping your arm through rigging or directly holding onto your boat make sure it doesn’t slip away from you. This is especially important in rough waters.

  2. Step 2

A quick flip of the boat to upright it will keep more water from rushing in. With your boat upright retrieve your paddle float. Place it over one of your paddle blades, clip any retaining devices and inflate all chambers.

  3. Step 3

Slip one end of the sling over the bare paddle shaft, not the end with the float. Reach under the boat to retrieve the other end of the sling. Lay the paddle across the back of the cockpit coaming as in a dock entry.

  4. Step 4

The end with the float should be extended out perpendicular to the boat. Loop the sling over the paddle shaft next to the side of the boat. Loop it over and around itself so it forms a small stirrup hung over the paddle shaft at your side. The float braced on the boat will keep the boat from rolling as you climb up and onto your boat using the stirrup to assist you.

  5. Step 5

As you enter the cockpit and slide down into the seat favor your side supported by the float. This will keep you from capsizing again. Slip your paddle through the rigging, bilge your boat, affix your spray skirt and deflate your paddle-float. Your back on your way.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keeping the sling tight will aid reentry.
  • Always keep an eye on your paddle float during reentry.
  • Always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device when paddling.
