Knowing how to perform a T-rescue in a kayak allows you to upright your paddling partner’s boat after draining all the water from it. With this rescue technique no paddle floats or slings are necessary. Read on to perform a T-rescue in a kayak.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Paddle to the overturned boat, slip your paddle through your rigging and walk around their boat until their bow is perpendicular to your cockpit. The two boats will now form a T.

  2. Step 2

Have the paddler in the water hold onto the stern and apply pressure downward as you lift the bow of the boat sliding it up and across your hull until all the water has drained out.

  3. Step 3

Roll the boat upright and off your boat. Don’t forget to communicate with the swimming paddler before you do this to avoid bumping them with the boat. Be careful not to scoop up more water as you turn it upright.

  4. Step 4

Align the two boats in opposite directions, bow to stern. Take the swimmers paddle and place it between your arms and chest as you take a firm grip on the other boats coming and assist the swimmer back into the boat.

  5. Step 5

You can also store the paddle in your rigging. Help the paddler with the spray skirt and check to see if they are injured. Return their paddle to them and you’re on your way.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear a properly-fitted PFD when paddling.
