Some of us have shopped so much we become bored in so doing; however, there is a remedy. Although I can't say the solution would be to stop shopping - unheard of - of course: the solution is alleviating the occasional doldrums of the shopping routine by the way we shop. Take one day and shop according to the way someone else, you know, would shop. In other words, shop according to someone else's principles and tastes. In order to do this there are some basic rules to follow.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • An open mind and a great attitude.

How to Shop to Beat the Doldrums

Step1
The first thing you must do is recognize the rules of shopping to beat the doldrums. Rule number one is you must admire the person wherein you are emulating shopping preferences. The person you select to shop like is not part of some random selection. This person will be made "king or queen for the day" in your shopping process. The person, therefore, in your opinion must have good sense and equally good taste.

If this person shops over your budget then consider where they would most likely shop if they had your financial means.

My process was easy as I chose for my "One Day Shop as Someone Else Would Shop" my Dad. On another occasion, I chose my Mother. You will be buying items for you, but according to what you think the person of your "One Day sShop as Someone Else Would Shop" would prefer for you.

In my Dad's case, he was extremely practical, thrifty or economical and preferred higher-quality brands and materials. (I take this as a result of growing up in the economy minded Midwest. When I was growing up in Indianapolis, Indiana my parents both took great pains to teach me the value of economy in the way they conducted their lives. A frugal mindset was part of our household by-laws allowing us to always have plenty of security.) I also knew my Dad would not approve of any "shoddy" workmanship. As a result of this evaluation, I headed for the thrift store, not because I reasoned he'd shop at one, but because I needed to stay within the parameters of my budget still adhering to his tastes. I also felt reasonably certain, had he been around for this expedition, he'd would have appreciated my true sense of economy.

I selected classic styles in linens and better silks. I didn't spend a bundle in so doing. You can do the same. In fact, the experience made me more discerning in all my future purchases. I've been much more cognizant of fabric content and overall fabric construction since this shopping experiment.

The day I shopped according to my Mother's principles and tastes, I was able to purchase a huge assortment of material remnants and a lace coverlet for around $3.00. She liked to hone her creative side and so do I; however with a generous economic flair.
Step2
The next thing you need to establish in the process is to decide where it is you will shop. Selection needs to be in a place within the parameters of your own personal budget and where you may procure items similar to items appreciated by your Icon. Also, you must be able to use and or wear the items you purchase.
Step3
Plan on wearing or using the items you purchase as soon as possible. Again, this item still needs to be acceptable to you even if it isn't normally the first thing you would pick for yourself. The whole process is to open up your mind to new and different ideas and items as well as ways of thinking.
Step4
The items you select must not be so radically different that other individuals wonder what has gotten into you. If clothes is your fancy, you may wish to shop with the slant on what would this Icon select for me. Other items such as household decorations and products may be altered from your normal course as long as you can still appreciate the change from routine.
Since it's shopping boredom we are trying to correct, the suggested course of action described herein may be precisely what you need.

Tips & Warnings

  • During the initial process, do not pick a shopping Icon so far out in left field that you won't be able to wear or use any of the items you purchase. Hopefully, likability of the person selected will keep your mind opened and accepting of trying new items which you can use and wear.
  • You do not need to tell your Icon you completed this process. Actually it may put them "on the spot." Therefore, disclosure is not necessarily advised. This process is basically for you so you may benefit from shopping in a new and different light.
  • Maybe it is not so much items purchased that need to be different in your shopping as the routine itself. If you cannot come up with a shopping Icon then try a new way to shop. If you normally shop in a grocery then shop in an open market setting. If you shop at the mall, try to visit a discounter and vice versa. If you shop at a home "decor" store, try shopping or visiting an artist colony or a craft mall.
  • Be creative and flexible and your shopping doldrums should be over in no time.
