Step1
The first thing you must do is recognize the rules of shopping to beat the doldrums. Rule number one is you must admire the person wherein you are emulating shopping preferences. The person you select to shop like is not part of some random selection. This person will be made "king or queen for the day" in your shopping process. The person, therefore, in your opinion must have good sense and equally good taste.
If this person shops over your budget then consider where they would most likely shop if they had your financial means.
My process was easy as I chose for my "One Day Shop as Someone Else Would Shop" my Dad. On another occasion, I chose my Mother. You will be buying items for you, but according to what you think the person of your "One Day sShop as Someone Else Would Shop" would prefer for you.
In my Dad's case, he was extremely practical, thrifty or economical and preferred higher-quality brands and materials. (I take this as a result of growing up in the economy minded Midwest. When I was growing up in Indianapolis, Indiana my parents both took great pains to teach me the value of economy in the way they conducted their lives. A frugal mindset was part of our household by-laws allowing us to always have plenty of security.) I also knew my Dad would not approve of any "shoddy" workmanship. As a result of this evaluation, I headed for the thrift store, not because I reasoned he'd shop at one, but because I needed to stay within the parameters of my budget still adhering to his tastes. I also felt reasonably certain, had he been around for this expedition, he'd would have appreciated my true sense of economy.
I selected classic styles in linens and better silks. I didn't spend a bundle in so doing. You can do the same. In fact, the experience made me more discerning in all my future purchases. I've been much more cognizant of fabric content and overall fabric construction since this shopping experiment.
The day I shopped according to my Mother's principles and tastes, I was able to purchase a huge assortment of material remnants and a lace coverlet for around $3.00. She liked to hone her creative side and so do I; however with a generous economic flair.
Step2
The next thing you need to establish in the process is to decide where it is you will shop. Selection needs to be in a place within the parameters of your own personal budget and where you may procure items similar to items appreciated by your Icon. Also, you must be able to use and or wear the items you purchase.
Step3
Plan on wearing or using the items you purchase as soon as possible. Again, this item still needs to be acceptable to you even if it isn't normally the first thing you would pick for yourself. The whole process is to open up your mind to new and different ideas and items as well as ways of thinking.
Step4
The items you select must not be so radically different that other individuals wonder what has gotten into you. If clothes is your fancy, you may wish to shop with the slant on what would this Icon select for me. Other items such as household decorations and products may be altered from your normal course as long as you can still appreciate the change from routine.
Since it's shopping boredom we are trying to correct, the suggested course of action described herein may be precisely what you need.
