Monopoly has been a favorite board game of Americans for generations. But it can get a tad dull. Trading can spice things up and provide players with monopolies, but it's a bummer when you continue to land on properties you once owned and are forced to give your trading partner thousands of bucks. You can minimize those experiences. Read on to learn how to rip off your opponent in Monopoly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Monopoly game
  • At least one opponent
  • Competitive spirit

Step1
Understand that each player places a different value on winning. Figure out which players care least about winning and offer to trade with them.
Step2
Think about who is the least experienced player in the group. The sheer joy of trading might result in that player agreeing to a stupid move. That's another player to target for trade talks.
Step3
Consider that most players get excited about the prospect of having a monopoly on Boardwalk and Park Place. If you own one of those properties, offer it to the player who owns the other. It might give you two monopolies. Your opponent will spend the rest of the game frustrated when nobody lands on Boardwalk or Park Place.
Step4
Grab the railroads. Even trade a weaker monopoly (the light blue or purple properties) to procure all four, which assures you of $200 every time an opponent lands on one. The money adds up.
Step5
Forget the utilities. Utilities are not worth the money.
Step6
Be vigilant. Demand a trade that will secure a monopoly and wait for one opponent to get desperate enough to complete the deal. As that desperation grows, the properties and cash needed to finish the transaction will shrink in value.

Tips & Warnings

  • Know which monopolies provide the best bang for the buck. The orange properties (St. James, Tennessee and New York) are landed on often because any player rolling a 6, 8 or 9 out of jail hits those spots.
  • Boardwalk and Park Place? Forget it. The "Go To Jail" often sends players back before they hit those valuable properties and the "Chance" space also allows opponents to avoid Boardwalk and Park Place.
  • Don't toy with your opponents for too long. If they play for an hour or so without securing a monopoly, they are likely to quit. And you don't want to win that way, do you?
