How to Live With a Republican

It's hard enough, sometimes, to get along with people when you share an ideology or philosophy. It's even harder when you don't. Everyone is bound to have a family member or roommate who doesn't share their views; somehow, you have to find a way to live in harmony. If you happen to share a home with a Republican and find yourself in opposition to her views, try these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Make the effort to enjoy the variety of views in your home rather than dwell on the distinct differences. The beauty in diversity is that it means that everyone is thinking for himself.
Step2
Keep political subjects away from the dinner table. Reserve the topic for times when you're already in a good mood and up for some friendly debate.
Step3
Remember that the Republican in your home may feel isolated and picked on if she's the only one in the household who subscribes to this doctrine. Be sure she knows that you love and respect her, and encourage her to always stick to her guns.
Step4
Tune him out if you feel yourself losing patience, or if he's deliberately trying to push your buttons. Everyone does this sometimes, and the trick is to not take the bait. If the argument isn't civil, you don't have to participate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't incessantly proselytize your own ideology. It's sometimes difficult to remember to respect everyone's views when it comes to your own family. You wouldn't want your Republican constantly preaching to you.
