Driver's education programs are not only readily accessible all over the country, but are required to complete in some states before teens are able to apply for their driver's license. Use these steps to learn how to choose a driver's education program in your area that qualifies with your state department of motor vehicles.

From Quick Guide: Driver's Education
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk to your local Department of Motor Vehicles. Your state may have a listing of specific driver's education programs they recommend. Make sure to call the program before enrolling for details including cost, dates, times and required documents you may need to bring.

  2. Step 2

Consider the Driver Ed in a Box. It is a complete driver education course that includes videos, interactive classroom, audio CD's and training mirrors. Visit the website for state specific and ordering information.

  3. Step 3

Check out your public school driver education programs. Though they are not as prevalent as they used to be, many public schools still offer driver education programs. Used discretion when choosing a public school program, some may not offer as in-depth information as a local independent driver education program.

  4. Step 4

Look into Driving Skills for Life. Driving Skills for Life is a free driver's education program developed by Ford and GHSA. It is an online module that offers realistic situations to think through. Check out the website for more information and how to sign up.

Tips & Warnings
  • No matter what program you are considering, public or private, make sure they are certified to offer driver's education courses and if applicable that they are recognized in your state for the state driver's education program requirements.
