If you love outdoor sports like extreme hiking or mountain climbing, then you know that learning how to tie certain knots is a must. One of the handiest is called a butterfly loop knot. It provides a strong, secure loop in the middle of your line for attaching another object. Here's how to tie a butterfly loop knot.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Lay your rope flat or pull it taut.
Step2
Make a large loop in the center of the rope by twisting one side of the rope over the other.
Step3
Twist the center of the loop you just made again, forming the number "8" in the middle of your rope.
Step4
Push the top of your "8" (the second loop you made) under the base line of your rope and through the first loop (the base of the figure "8").
Step5
Pull the loop through until the rope is taut. The Butterfly Loop Knot is perfect next time you go fishing to hang your catches on until you get back to shore.

Tips & Warnings

  • Repeat several butterfly loop knots on the same line to hang multiple objects.
  • Be sure that you are using rope that is strong enough to hold the object you are hanging from the loop. When you purchase rope, there should be a guide as to how much it can hold.
