A Constrictor Hitch Knot is used to tie a rope around an object, especially as temporary whipping or permanent binding when more than one in a row is needed. However, a strangle knot should be used instead when more than one knot in line is needed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the characteristics of the Constrictor Hitch. It grips very tightly and only the double constrictor is a stronger hitch. When made properly, this knot is very difficult to untie without tools and should never be tied without a bight if you ever plan on untying it.

  2. Step 2

Assume the rope will be tied to a horizontal pole. Lay the rope over the pole so that the standing end of the rope is in front of the pole and its working end is behind the pole.

  3. Step 3

Bring the working end of the rope under the pole to the left and pull it up to the front so that it crosses over to the right side of the standing end.

  4. Step 4

Drape the working end of the rope behind the pole so that it hangs down parallel with the standing end.

  5. Step 5

Bring the working end of the rope over to the left of the standing end and push it underneath the loop on the left. Dress and set the knot. A Constrictor Hitch may be easily untied if you push through a bight of rope on this step instead of just the end.
