The Buntline Hitch Knot was originally designed to tie buntlines to the foot of the square sails on a boat. The jerking of the sail tightened the knot as it moved back and forth. Typically this knot is used to tie a line to a post. With a few minor differences, the same knot is also used for neckties.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Bring the end of the rope around the post, or other item you are tying the buntline hitch knot to, and hold onto the free end of the rope. The free end of the rope should be on the right side of the post.

  2. Step 2

Place the free end of the rope over the rope on the left side of the post.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the free end of the rope back under the rope again, and then bring the free end of the rope closer to the post.

  4. Step 4

Go over the rope close to the post with the free end and stick it through the loop and back under again through the nearest hole.

  5. Step 5

Push the knot up toward the post while holding onto the long end of the rope to pull the rope tight.

  • This knot may be difficult to master at first. Practice tying the Buntline Hitch and you will soon be able to do it with ease.
  • The Buntline Hitch Knot is more likely to jam up and be difficult to untie than two half-hitch knots.
