A disc golf thumber throw is a fairly easy throw to learn. Unlike the backhand which requires dexterity, timing and complicated footwork, the overhand thumber throw technique is a throw similar to sports like baseball and football.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Rest the disc comfortably between your thumb and index finger.

  2. Step 2

Keep the thumb at the inner rim.

  3. Step 3

Give the disc a pinch while putting the index finger on the flight plate.

  4. Step 4

Curl the remaining three fingers against your palm because they are not used in this throw.

  5. Step 5

Get ready to throw the disc by bending the elbow of the hand that is holding the disc. Reach the disc behind your body like you are throwing a baseball or football.

  6. Step 6

Prepare to do the three-step run up. You want to run three steps and thrust the disc over your head toward your target, like a center fielder throwing out a runner at home plate.

  7. Step 7

Start your throw on the opposite leg of the disc and end up on the same leg at the end of the throw. To start your throw have the elbow bent, timing your throw with the three-step run-up, thrust the disc toward the target and watch the disc go in a flight pattern the resembles a corkscrew, rotating at a 180-degree angle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Throwing the thumber in the wind is not that easy and is not recommended because the disc is vertical.
  • The more durable your disc is, the better chance you have throwing a thumber in the wind.
