Step 1
Measure the amount of ceiling tiles you need. Multiply the length of the room times the width to get the square footage. Then add an additional 10 percent for error.
-
Step 2
Purchase the ceiling tiles. They come in a wide variety of textures and patterns. If you plan to create a design from patterned tiles, allow for extra tiles.
-
Step 3
Locate and mark the ceiling joists with a chalk line. Nail 1-by-2 or 1-by-3 furring strips at right angles to the joists with 6d nails. Place each nail 12 inches apart center to center. Periodically check that the furring strips are square with the joists and parallel to each other.
-
Step 4
Center the first tile on the furring strip. Staple it to the furring strip with the grooved side toward the center of the room. Place three staples in the tile's grooved edge. Slide the next tile into place to interlock the two tiles. Nail the edge closest to the wall in place with 4d nails.
-
Step 5
Continue placing tiles. Use three staples in each tile's grooved edge. Cut tiles as necessary as you come to the end of each row. Nail all tiles that intersect with the wall with 4d nails.
-
Step 6
Finish room with cove molding. Miter the corners to fit.
