1
Peruse your yellow pages to find a windshield replacement company that offers car insurance holders repair service by waiving of their deductible. Most windshield replacement clauses in major insurance policies have a $50 deductible.
-
2
Make sure you have the make, model year, license plate number and vehicle identification number with you when you set your appointment. The auto glass company needs to bring the correct windshield for the replacement.
-
3
Determine with the auto windshield replacement company that there will not be any out of pocket expense for your windshield replacement. In other words, your insurance company must be billed, not you, and the deductible is waived.
-
4
Set an appointment for the company to come to your home or office to replace the windshield. All auto glass companies are mobile now. This is a common practice. However, you need to make it clear to the company that if they say "between 3 and 4 in the afternoon," the repair man comes at that time. No lateness is allowed. If early, ask them to call and see if your vehicle is available.
-
5
Wait for the auto glass repair man during the time he is suppose to arrive. Be ready to sign the papers, so your insurance company can be billed properly.
-
6
Go over any instructions from the repair man like how long the tape is supposed to stay attached to hold the windshield in place until the glue has dried. Also, this is the time to ask any concerns or questions.

What is the best deal? Unfortuneatly, in the auto glass replacement industry, this is not such an easy task, considering that ANYONE can legally install a windshield. What if...I had someone watch an installation and think it looked easy enough to open his own shop! He's even going to charge less than me cause it's so easy. Of course he doesn't have any insurance to protect the consumer. He also hasn't done any training or educating himself on the products, the differences in quality (especially adhesives), why things are the way the are...etc. He starts the business, the install he watched took less than an hour, why is it taking him 3 1/2 hours while his girl friend is sitting in his truck? He can't figure out why all his customers are complaining about the wind noise and the water leaks and hopefully realizes that it's not as easy as he thought before his great idea actually -

Insurance varies by state, so calling to check your coverage is smart. I do not know where the author is from but from my experience in California, the deductable can be from zero to $1000, this depends on the policy holder. Also, a side note on this subject, lowering your deductable on the comprehensive side (where your glass claims are paid) is very affordable. In my experiences this averages from $60 - $100 a year, to lower a deductable from $1000 to $0 - $100. A windshield replacement in CA has an out of pocket cost of the deductable on the comprehensive side. Most shops will most def be happy to help with that if it is within reason. In addition, these glass claims (comprehensive only) are not said to ever raise your rates, quite the opposite of claims on the collision side!
