Get Awarded the Police Medal of Meritorious Service

The Order of Merit of the Police Forces is awarded to members of the police forces in Canada for conspicuous merit and exceptional service. It was established by the commander-in-chief and governor general of Canada in October 2000 to honor the career of a qualifying service member. The following steps will show how to get awarded the police medal of meritorious service.

Instructions

    • 1

Be an active member of a Canadian police force at the time of the appointment. This may include but is not limited to administration, research and publication, training and development and uniformed patrol. The award is not based on any single incident; rather the focus is on the overall contribution made during the career of the qualifying member.

    • 2

Receive a nomination from the Regional Advisory Committee or the general public. The nominations are then considered by the National Advisory Committee, which makes its recommendations to the governor general of Canada. The governor general then issues the medal to about 50 members each year.

    • 3

Qualify for the Commander Order of Merit. This is the highest level of membership and is awarded for demonstrated leadership over an extended period usually at the national or international level.

    • 4

Perform outstanding meritorious service over an extended period in a duty of responsibility at the regional or provincial level to be awarded the Officer Order of Merit.

    • 5

Execute duties with exceptional service over an extended period at the local or regional level to qualify for the Member Order of Merit.
