Get Awarded the Police Medal of Valor

U.S. police forces are not centralized so each police department has its own set of awards and qualifying criteria. In addition, federal law enforcement agencies offer separate awards that usually carry greater status. The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor is the highest decoration for a public safety officer in the United States. Here's how to get awarded the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor.

Instructions

    • 1

Exhibit a single act of exceptional courage, extraordinary decisiveness and presence of mind while attempting to save or protect a life. The action must be performed with unusual swiftness without regard for personal safety and deemed to be above the call of duty. Refer to the United States Department of Justice website for the definition of these terms.

    • 2

Be nominated by a recommending official, who must complete a nomination form from the United States Department of Justice.

    • 3

Mail the nomination form and any supplemental documentation so that it is received between May 31 and July 31 each year. The mailing address for the Medal of Valor Review Board is National Medal of Valor Office, 810 7th Street, NW, Washington DC 20531.

Receive the Medal of Valor posthumously. The recommending official should make it clear to the review board that the nomination is for a posthumous award and also must indicate if the candidate's death was a result of the qualifying act.
