A fire chief is the person who is responsible for the overall operation of a fire station. Many people have the idea that a fire chief simply supervises the fighting of a fire. In reality, a fire chief is responsible for much more.

Become a firefighter first if you want to become a fire chief. Gain experience as you work for a fire department and establish an excellent reputation for yourself. Most fire departments elect or appoint a fire chief from among established firefighters in that station or in the surrounding area fire departments.

Develop good leadership skills if you want to become a fire chief. You must motivate the firefighters under your supervision to do the best job possible. The atmosphere and morale within a fire department is largely dependent upon the attitude and leadership style of the fire chief. Take some courses in leadership, communication and motivation.

Make sure you have strong organizational skills. If you plan to become a fire chief, you must be able to handle many administrative duties. Overseeing policies and procedures, budgets, equipment purchase and maintenance and mountains of paperwork must be handled efficiently.

Be a good communicator and a people person if you want to be elected or appointed as a fire chief. To become the head of a fire department, you must be able to get along with all kinds of people, both within the department and in the community. The fire chief must be professional in handling the public and promoting safety awareness in a friendly way.

Have courage and nerves of steel if you want to become a fire chief. You must be able to run the fire department with professionalism and supervise a raging fire with calmness and clear thinking. You must be prepared to have everyone looking to you for guidance. Be able to work alongside your firefighters in the trenches as well as in the firehouse kitchen.

Step 1 is incorrect. Obviously you DO NOT have to become a certified firefighter in order to become a fire chief. One example of this is Chief Charles G. Middleton on Savannah Fire and Emergency Services. He IS NOT nor ever has been a certified firefighter. -
