There are many situations where people feel they may need to defend themselves. It is best not to wait until something happens, but rather be proactive in knowing what you would do in a threatening situation. Using a whistle is recommended in many situations requiring self defense.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Attach a whistle to your purse, keychain or bag. The main thing is to choose something that you always have with you, so you can easily access your whistle if a threatening situation arises. If you are walking to your car late at night with your keys in your hand and a whistle attached, you can blow into the whistle to startle an attacker and to attract needed help.

  2. Step 2

Think about attaching a whistle to your cell phone. This would work well in a difficult situation as you would first blow into the whistle to attract help and then use your cell phone to call for help.

  3. Step 3

Talk to your children about various situations that they may need help. Teach them to use a whistle for a self defense purpose and let them know that this is not a toy, but for emergency use only. A whistle for a child can be attached to their jacket, backpack and bicycle or can be worn on a cord around their neck or wrist. Some agencies work with law enforcement officers to educate children on the use of a whistle for emergencies. In addition, there are some special whistles designed just for children to use in an emergency.

  4. Step 4

Purchase quality whistles if you plan to use the whistle for a self defense situation. Sporting good stores sell whistles that would be good for these purposes. Visit websites that sell whistles for self defense. Many of these have special whistles for children. There are several varieties of emergency whistles. Some of these have a signal light that will blink in addition to the whistle sound.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you purchase a whistle to be used in an emergency situation, determine where you will keep it and practice grabbing it quickly and blowing. This is so that you will be prepared in the event you actually have to use it.
