Step 1
Find your tournament. There are a wide variety of online poker communities to choose from, and many of them offer freeroll tournaments to keep players interested and get new web traffic. Check out lists of freeroll games at sites like launchpoker, pokerlistings and pokersourceonline, as well as a whole bunch of others, to find games offering prizes (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Get the time. Although online poker isn't as time-stratified as sitting down to a table, time is still of the essence. Figure out when to join and how long it might take. Sites like pokerstars offer weekly freeroll games for your convenience.
-
Step 3
Sit down with confidence. Experts say it's in a player's interest to play freeroll tournaments aggressively, especially in the beginning. Take a good hand and roll with it. The fun advantage of freeroll games is that you're not losing anything, and winning is a great bonus.
-
Step 4
Be selective with big bets. There's a time and a place for pushing the pot up, and although you can end up taking pots early on, you'll want to use discretion on when to up the ante and when to leave it alone.
-
Step 5
Tighten up your game toward the end. Players in all tournaments, including freerolls, are advised to start hedging more when more is on the table and a few players have been ejected from the game. A good beginning combined with a strategic endgame could have you walking away with the "gifts" that the casino or other party has laid on the table for the freeroll winner.
