When you get tired of the standard straight poker or 5-card stud, switching to a new game can liven up a round of poker. Learning to play a new poker game, such as New York Stud, allows you to suggest the game on poker night and introduce it to your buddies.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Setup New York Stud with a basic stud poker setup. For a 5-card stud game, each player will eventually receive 1 card face down and 4 cards face up. In a 7-card stud game, each player will receive 3 cards face down and 4 cards face up.

  2. Step 2

Hold the first betting round after all face down cards have been dealt and the first face up card is dealt. All subsequent betting rounds will occur each time another face up card is dealt.

  3. Step 3

Add the New York Stud variation. In New York Stud, an outside straight beats a pair. An outside straight is four cards in numerical order regardless of suit, or a hand which is one card short at the beginning or end of a full straight.

  4. Step 4

Change the order of what beats what to an outside straight beats a pair and two pair beats an outside straight.

  5. Step 5

Instruct players who have a face up outside straight to bet over players who have a face up pair.

  6. Step 6

Add wild cards as you wish. The dealer can make any card in the deck wild by calling it out before he deals. It's best to enforce a stipulation in which only face down cards count towards the wild card rule. A face up wild card significantly tips a players hand.
