How to Follow Poker Etiquette

Learning poker etiquette is a basic part of learning how to play the game of poker. People who are ignorant of poker etiquette end up offending other players with their bad poker manners. Follow poker etiquette to make game play an enjoyable experience for all.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep conversation to a minimum. When people are playing poker, they want to concentrate on the game and not idle chit chat. This also means that you should keep cell phones turned off and not take calls at the table.

    • 2

Remember to be polite. You should not attempt to quarrel with other players or begrudge a player of their win.

    • 3

Manage your play area. Keep all of your chips ordered and on the table. Only handle your chips, don't try to touch another player's pile. The cards also need to remain on the table to avoid cheating.

    • 4

Watch your speed. Nothing annoys poker players more than a player who takes forever to bet, fold, etc. Keep up the flow of the game by reacting quickly when your turn arises.

    • 5

Apologize for any transgressions that you made. You may have broken poker etiquette by accident and not realize the mistake that you made until afterwards. Apologize to all players if this is the case.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't make comments about the game or cards that you threw out after you fold. This also means not showing your hand if you fold before the end of the round. You can mess up the hand for other players.

  • Don't blame the dealer for hands that don't go your way. You should always offer them respect no matter what the outcome of the game.
