The game of poker conjures up images of the Old West, shots of whiskey, slights of hand, bar room brawls and gun shots. Today, poker is more than a high stakes game. It is a serious sport. Poker clubs, associations and tournaments adhere to strict codes of conduct, all with common elements. Follow a few simple steps to assure compliance.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Play solo. Conspiring with another poker player constitutes dishonest conduct.
Step2
Practice civility in language. Keep the talking to a minimum. Choose standard words for polite company. Vulgar utterances, course language and swearing have no place in poker.
Step3
Avoid gesturing. Such nonverbal conduct can be disruptive. Lack of body movement keeps the interaction formal and helps establish a poker face.
Step4
Lower the volume. Muffle any sounds that must be made during the poker game. This includes voice volume, chair movement, card sorting and chip stacking. Turn cell phones off.
Step5
Respect the environment. Take care not to crease and wrinkle the cards. Keep refreshments off the poker table. Players' areas should be as neat at the end of the game as the start.
Step6
Leave guns and knives at home. They intimidate other players and compromise safety. Tempers can flare especially in high stakes poker games.
Step7
Disallow illicit drugs. Use of these substances goes beyond breach of conduct to violation of the law. Follow house rules regarding the when and where of alcohol and tobacco use in poker.

Tips & Warnings

  • Review the house rules regarding conduct prior to the start of a poker game at a new establishment.
