Step 1
Check with a hair salon in your area if you have trouble finding a toupee. A hair salon or a barber shop should have someone who can tell you the best place to buy a toupee. Some of these shops even carry a selection or can order a toupee for you.

Step 2
Shop around until you find a toupee that you feel comfortable in. You probably want your toupee to look as natural as possible. Especially if you are buying a partial toupee to "fill in" hair on your head, check the texture and color shades to try to find ones that match your existing hair as closely as possible.

Step 3
Go online and shop to buy a toupee. Some sites have a variety of pictures that you can look at to choose your color and the fullness you desire. Most sites will have a color chart that you can choose from. Some toupee sites provide custom-order service that can help you achieve a perfect match for your natural hair. They will add varying shades of color for you and even add some gray for a natural look.

Step 4
Know that if you have lost your hair as a result of chemotherapy, the cost of your toupee may be tax-deductible. Also, your health insurance company might pay some of the cost. Read your policy or call your insurance representative to find out. If you buy a toupee due to hair loss from illness, ask your doctor to write a prescription for you that uses the words "hair prosthesis." You must have this for tax or insurance purposes.
