Step 1
Learn the issues, laws and players. To start lobbying effectively against Internet taxation you need to be informed. You should first get an understanding of current legislation, such as the Internet Tax Freedom Act, that prohibits government tax on the Internet. Also, know the major congressional supporters and opponents of Internet tax and what an Internet tax would mean for people's pocketbooks at the end of the month.
-
Step 2
Lobby your congressman. The most direct way to lobby against Internet taxation is to contact your congressman about the issue. You can write and send a letter to your congressman using snail mail or Congress' "Write Your Representative" webpage. Also, consider banding together with people you know, both online and off, to start a letter writing campaign to magnify the effect you have.
-
Step 3
Sign a petition and support a senator. Signing a petition is yet another legal way of making your opposition to Internet taxation heard and felt. Sign one of the many Internet petitions against Internet tax. Also, write letters of support and contribute to the reelection campaigns of senators, such as Senator Mitch McConnell, who themselves lobby against Internet taxation.
-
Step 4
Join a grassroots lobby organization. Organizations such as the No Internet Tax organization spend their time organizing and recruiting volunteers to lobby against Internet taxation (see Resources below). Join or even start an organization such as No Internet Tax to lobby the government on this issue. Check out tech and Internet bloggers, like TechCrunch, who write regularly on the subject so you can stay up to date with the Internet taxation lobby.
