How to Pay Taxes With E-Filing

So you've e-filed your taxes online and you're wondering how you'll pay the tax you owe to the government. E-file has become a very popular way to file your taxes and being able to pay what you owe online enables you to keep what you owe the government a few days longer than paper filing. Here's how to pay what you owe when you e-file your taxes online.

Instructions

    • 1

See if you're eligible for Free File to pay your taxes online. Free File is a service of the IRS, partnered with other companies. Go to the IRS website and select the "Free File" topic to see if you're eligible (see Resources below).

    • 2

Select a company or software with whom you'll file your taxes online. Companies like H&R Block have e-filing available right on their website or if your taxes are more complicated then buy software that you can use on your computer to e-file your taxes online.

    • 3

Fill in all the proper billing information. If you owe taxes, you will need to fill in credit card information as well as the name and address that appears on your tax form.

    • 4

Pay the filing fee. Unless you use Free File, the company or software you use will charge you to e-file your taxes.

    • 5

Check the status of your return. In most cases you can check the status of your return online and see when the payment to the IRS was completed. You can also check with your credit card company or bank as well to see when the payment cleared to confirm that your taxes have been paid online.
