E-filing is an easy way to file your tax returns online. It is also a great way to get your refunds quickly. Once you have e-filed, you may want to check on the status of your tax refund to make sure there are no problems and that all the information regarding your refund is correct. This is an easy procedure that anyone can follow.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Social security number
  • Filing status
  • Refund amount

Step1
File your tax return electronically online. When filing, you must designate where and how you would like your refund to be sent. You can choose direct deposit or choose to have a paper check sent out.
Step2
Wait at least 7 days after you e-file to check the status of your refund. Tax returns filed electronically are processed in half the time than the traditional paper returns.
Step3
Log on to the official Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website to start tracking your e-file refund and click on the "Where's My Refund" link on the homepage (see Resources below).
Step4
Gather the following information before continuing to track your refund: Your refund amount, your filing status, your social security number.
Step5
Continue the tracking process by clicking on the next "Where's My Refund" link.
Step6
Fill in your social security number, filing status and refund amount in the appropriate areas and click "Submit."
Step7
Continue filling in the requested information on the following pages until your refund information has been located.

Tips & Warnings

  • If there is a problem delivering your refund, you may be able to change your address or other necessary personal information online. If this option is not available, you can contact the Refund Hotline at (800) 829-1954. Make sure you have your refund amount, filing status and social security number on hand.
