An ergonomic mouse is designed for you to work in front of the computer while keeping your hands and arms in a comfortable position. Ergonomic mice are helpful for reducing muscle and nerve strain associated with carpal tunnel syndrome or repetitive stress injury.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the mouse near the keyboard. This reduces stress to your arms and shoulders that can be caused by sitting in an awkward position. Keeping the ergonomic mouse close to the keyboard saves you from reaching forward, which is one of the culprits of joint and muscle strain.

  2. Step 2

Maintain a straight, neutral hand and wrist position while holding the mouse to prevent straining. This should be similar to a handshake position. You may have to adjust your keyboard, chair or desk to get into a comfortable position. Move your arm and shoulder freely to prevent wrist pain.

  3. Step 3

Alternate your hands while using the ergonomic mouse. Most ergonomic mice are designed so that you can switch hands while working on your computer, therefore resting them to reduce hand strain.

  4. Step 4

Hold the ergonomic mouse lightly instead of gripping it. Gently holding the ergonomic mouse while navigating your computer can prevent pain to your hands.

  5. Step 5

Take advantage of the features associated with your ergonomic mouse to reduce discomfort. Some may include a left and right click button, a trackball feature, or a joystick style with a button on top that you can use with your thumb with one click. These types do not require you to move the entire mouse, and they keep your hand in a neutral, comfortable position.
