Step 1
Visit a swimming pool dealer. Not only do they provide pools and spas, they usually have numerous options for safety fences. Even if they don't provide installation, they can point you in the right direction for finding a fence contractor.
-
Step 2
Choose a fence that complies with the minimum height for safety. From 3 1/2-feet high, as the lowest acceptable height, to 6-feet tall, swimming pool fences come in many styles that will adapt to your property.
-
Step 3
Look for narrow bar width to keep small children or animals from squeezing through. The space between the rails of your fence must not exceed 4 inches. If you have an existing fence that does not comply, add a mesh safety fence to the inside to bring it to acceptable standards.
-
Step 4
Install a self-latching gate. The gate must close automatically and latch. You can find hinges and latches to install on an existing gate to bring it into compliance. Place the latch high enough that small children can't reach it. Add a padlock if you have any doubts.
-
Step 5
Assess the sturdiness of your fence. Metal can rust from constant water spray and wood can warp and rot unless treated. Using marine quality materials will assure your fence holds up to frequent soakings.
-
Step 6
Consider a removable fence if you are unable to put a permanent fence in place. Constructed out of clear polyvinyl and reinforced panels, these fences can be installed on top of existing concrete and provide a barrier for even the most determined youngsters.
