Step 1
Protect your hammock from the elements. Do not leave your hammock outside year round. The rain, snow and UV sun rays will make the fibers in rope hammocks deteriorate and the color fade in cloth hammocks. Instead, make a habit of bringing your hammock in when you are done lounging.
-
Step 2
Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. In general, hand washing in a gentle cleaning solution of mild soap and water is all that is needed. Don't use bleach or harsh cleaners on ropes which may affect their structural integrity. You also may want to wax the wooden spreaders to protect them from water damage.
-
Step 3
Make sure your hammock dries completely before storing it. Mold will literally feed on rope fibers of some hammocks or you may find holes in the cloth of your hammock surrounded by mold staining the next time you go to use it. Storing your hammock even slightly damp can encourage mold growth, so make sure your hammock is completely dry before storing it.
-
Step 4
Fold the hammock properly. Follow the manufacturer's directions for storing. If there are no storage instructions that came with your hammock, then be sure to tie up the arms of the hammock to avoid tangling and then fold it neatly.
-
Step 5
Hang your hammock from a looped rope over the hanging hardware. Keeping the hammock off the hanging hardware helps eliminate the friction which could cause the rope on rope hammocks to fail.
