The backbone of Formula One racing is the set of complex rules that govern the sport. Following the rules and their frequent amendments takes some work but is worthwhile. Follow these steps to stay abreast of Formula One racing rules.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know the technical and sporting division. The most basic division of Formula One rules is that of sporting and technical rules. Technical rules deal with the parameters of the racing cars and the make up and operation of the teams that run the cars on the track. The sporting rules are what might be called the "rules of the road" and govern what moves are legal and illegal while the cars are in motion.

  2. Step 2

Get the basics. You can get the Formula One basic regulations by checking the rules and regulations page on the website of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the racing organization that oversees Formula One races. The rules and regulations are so detailed and undergo such frequent modification that to follow their progress you need to read the regular updates put out by the FIA.

  3. Step 3

Follow the yearly changes. Each year, the FIA releases a set of amended rules and regulations that pertain to both the sporting and technical rules of the racing. While most of the changes are technical, the FIA does make annual alterations to the sporting rules. You can get a summary of the yearly changes on Formula One focused racing websites such as MotorSM.com.

  4. Step 4

Understand violations. To follow Formula One rules in a thorough way you need to understand not just the rules and regulations but their interpretation or application in cases where the rules are violated. Reading the sports sections of most internationally focused newspapers or following racing or Formula One magazines will give you the skinny on how regulators rule on various violations. Use these regular updates to follow Formula One rules.
