Buy Non-GMO Cereal

Many people don't realize that genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, have found their way into our food sources. If you are looking to eliminate GMOs in your foods, taking a close look at your breakfast cereal is great place to start. Here's how to buy non-GMO cereal for your family and have the peace of mind that comes from not feeding your family "Franken-Food."

Instructions

    • 1

Check your cereal's food label. Most food manufacturers label their food non-GMO if they have taken the extra expense to produce it as such. Buying whole grains does not necessarily mean that the grains have not been genetically modified. Reading the label assures you that the food does not contain GMOs.

Shop in specialty stores for your cereal. Health food stores such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Wild Oats have a wide selection of non-GMO foods, including cereals, to choose from.

    • 3

Change brands of cereal. Common household brands may have GMOs in them, especially if they're not labeled non-GMO. Brands such as Kashi and Nature's Path are good choices.

    • 4

Avoid cereals that contain corn products. Many food products that contain corn, such as corn syrup, contain GMOs. Avoiding corn products helps eliminate the source of these GMOs.

    • 5

Buy organic cereal. A quick and easy way to tell if a food has GMOs or not is to read "organic" on the front of the label. It's against FDA regulations to have GMOs in a food labeled "organic." If the item only contains some organic ingredients, then it may still contain GMOs, so read your food labels carefully.
