Outdoor furniture needs to hold up to the sun, rain and suntan oils and lotions. Many manufacturers make outdoor furniture from recycled products which can be recycled again. Instead of throwing your outdoor furniture away, consider these suggestions on how to recycle it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phone book
  • Recycle center
  • Scrap yard
  • Thrift store
  1. Step 1

Find a recycling center. You can look for recycling centers in the yellow pages. Waste removal companies often double as recycling centers. Some grocery stores have drop off bins for recycling.

  2. Step 2

Drop the outdoor furniture off at a recycle center. If the furniture is made from rigid plastic, it can typically be recycled. You can look for plastic that has been stamped with No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, No. 6 or No. 7. This means it's recyclable.

  3. Step 3

Strip the furniture to its frame. If your furniture has a metal frame, you can take it to a scrap yard. Frames are often made from aluminum, which can be recycled into products like pie pans. Some scrap yards pay you for the scrap based on the weight.

  4. Step 4

Reuse the material. You can use vinyl fabric to make a roof for a child's playhouse. Let your kids cut the fabric into triangles or rectangles to make flags for a fort. You may be able to use pieces from one piece of furniture to patch or fix another piece. Some people also use the material to create sun shades for their garden.

  5. Step 5

Donate your outdoor furniture. If you can't find a recycle center or you prefer to keep the outdoor furniture intact, you can take it to a thrift store. Wash and dry the furniture before you drop it off. You might want to call ahead to ensure the thrift store takes furniture.

Tips & Warnings
  • Vinyl can be stitched to make picnic tablecloths.
