Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by learning some history behind acid jazz. Know that the best way to begin any creative venture is to see how others before you have done it and to learn the history of the genre and where the music originated. You can also research funk and disco styles.

  2. Step 2

Become well versed in whatever instrument you will be playing acid jazz with. Take private instruction or some other means to help you learn basic music theory and technique before moving on to jazz technique.

  3. Step 3

Become familiar with playing more popular styles of music such as funk or disco, and the elements that inhabit those genres. Learn a little bit of electronic music production like scratching or synthesizer riffs, since it is typical in many acid jazz songs.

  4. Step 4

Practice with an ensemble or group and learn each others tendencies when playing. Be creative when experimenting with acid jazz because the genre is highly experimental. Play around with different modalities, key changes and riffs to create a sound unique to you.

  5. Step 5

Listen to as much acid jazz as possible to really become acquainted with how to play this jazz style. Play along with your favorite recordings to see if you can riff with the recording in an acid jazz style. Try recording yourself and then adding in different cuts and scratches to make it more authentic and finished.
