Step 1
Learn the history of Kansas City jazz to help you learn to appreciate the genre. Listen to some recordings of traditional Kansas City jazz; Charlie Parker is a forerunner of this style.
-
Step 2
Know that Kansas City jazz is played in a 4/4 beat as opposed to a faster 2/4 beat. Become familiarized with Kansas City jazz rhythmic style while listening to recordings.
-
Step 3
Use sheet music at first and follow along with a recording if one is available. Try to recognize improvisation you hear in the recording that is not in the music. Memorize the music so that you can later play it and add your own spontaneous improvisation when necessary.
-
Step 4
Make sure to give ample time for each musician in the band (if there is a band) to "riff", or exercise their soloist skills. Play frequently with your band so you can learn the personality of each player and how they like to show off their respective talents.
-
Step 5
Learn blues scales and jazz progressions to help you with your improvisational skills. Remember to always keep time by tapping your foot and most importantly to have fun and remember it doesn't have to be perfect. The beauty of jazz lies in its imperfection and spontaneity.
