How to Stand Out at a Black-Tie Prom

Prom is great time to unleash your personality and personal style. Whether it's by sporting a subtle but elegant dress or tux or by wearing something that crosses a few lines, there are a number of ways to stand out. If you want to look a little bit different, follow these steps to stand out at your black-tie prom.

1. Match your date. To make a subtle and elegant impression on other prom-goers, coordinate tie and dress colors. If the dress is a complex or rare color, go to a fabric store and get a bit of fabric that matches the dress in an interesting way. Take the fabric to a seamstress or tailor and have a bow tie and even a cummerbund made to match the dress. Also, choose the boutonniere and corsage to match the ensemble.

2. Go for a loud color. It's a risk, but colors such as orange, bright pink, fuchsia and metallic blues will make a big impact. Rise to the challenge with a makeup palette or hairstyle that shows confidence and playfulness. Before you commit to a striking color though, make sure that you're comfortable with it.

3. Show up under-dressed. One of the most certain ways to stand out at the prom is to come stylishly under-dressed. This doesn't mean that you should show up in your gym shorts. Instead, consider casual twists on the traditional attire, such as a tie-less tux or a suit or dress made from alternative materials such as canvas or even denim.

4. Bring an unlikely date. If you're not into the fashion thing then you can stand out at prom on account of whom your bring instead of what you wear. Of course, the most straightforward way to turn heads is to bring a hot date. Think about some local celebrities and spend a few weeks courting them to be your date to the prom.
