How to Recycle a Computer Monitor
Computer monitors contain hazardous materials and need to be disposed of properly or recycled. If everyone who has an unused computer monitor stored somewhere suddenly decided to get rid of them at the same time, there would be a mountain of monitors. So we need to be on our toes and recycle this outdated equipment in a timely and environmentally safe manner.

Check with local charities and schools to see if they can use your old monitor if it is still in working condition.

See if you can return it to the manufacturer. Some computer companies have programs that allow you to simply box up the equipment and return it or trade it in on new equipment.

Do an Internet search to find companies that accept recyclable electronic equipment or use some of the resources listed below.

Call your municipal solid waste department and inquire if they have a disposal program. Most do because they don't want these materials ending up in landfills.

Tips & Warnings
Business owners may qualify for a tax deduction when donating used monitors to a school or charity. This is not available to individuals, however.
Some recyclers offer a revenue-sharing program to large quantity generators of electronic waste.
It would be foolish to try to dismantle a computer monitor yourself. They contain lead, phosphorous, mercury and barium, which are poisonous. Broken glass would also be a hazard.
