Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Practice horsemanship patterns you have been given in the past or, if you're a beginner, look for some patterns in magazines or on the Internet. While these won't be the patterns you will use at the show, riding the patterns and smoothing out any difficulties you have with them with help you learn to ride with the flow of any pattern.
Step2
Take one pattern and divide it into separate maneuvers. Assign each maneuver a letter or number, such as "t" for trot, "8" for a figure 8 or "360" for turn around. Write these maneuvers out in the proper order and memorize the list. Then, go through the pattern in your mind without looking at notes.
Step3
Ride the horsemanship pattern when you've mastered running through it in your mind. It may be helpful to have a friend watch you ride the pattern to make sure you don't miss anything. If you successfully ride the pattern, move onto a new pattern.
Step4
Memorize the next pattern faster. Set time limits on each successive pattern so you get faster and faster and can eventually memorize a pattern in 15 minutes.
Step5
Use the same technique on the day of the show. Write out your horsemanship pattern using simple numbers and letters, memorize them and then walk through the pattern in your mind.
Step6
Relax by taking a few deep breaths before you memorize the horsemanship pattern and again before you ride. Staying calm will help your memorization ability. It may also help to go to a quite place away from distractions and other people while memorizing the pattern.
