At the end of the week, do you find yourself collapsing in exhaustion? Does juggling your personal life, your family life and your work life leave you drained? One way to renew your energy is to participate in Native American spa treatments. Whether you travel to a professional spa or create a do-it-yourself spa at home, you can use these traditional techniques and elements to renew your spirit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cedar (incense, soap or sachets)
  • Smooth stones
  • Corn meal
  • Honey

Step1
Travel. If you have the time and money available, traveling to a professional spa that specializes in Native American spa techniques is a perfect way to introduce these elements into your life. A quick Internet search of "Native American spa" will return lists of spas across the country that use these ancient practices.
Step2
Start with cedar. Cedar was used by Native Americans to cleanse and to heal. The smell will help you breathe easier and chase your worries away. At home you can use cedar incense, soap or sachets to bring this healing aroma into your private spa.
Step3
Add heat. Native Americans use sweat lodges for revitalization and renewal. At home you can soak in a hot tub or indulge in a hot stone foot massage. Heat smooth stones in hot water and then place them gently on the bottoms of your feet (it might help to have a partner for this technique) and between your toes. Relax while the stones gradually cool.
Step4
Step into your shower. Water is an important element in almost all Native American rituals. It is used for washing and refreshing your body and spirit. Start by taking a five-minute hot shower, then switch to cold water and slowly count to 60. Breathe deeply and slowly while you alternate hot and cold water two or three times.
Step5
Scrub your body with a mixture of 2 tbsp. of cornmeal, 1/4 cup honey and two tbsp. of water. Massage the scrub on your bare skin, gently stroking the paste toward your heart to help your circulation. Rinse the paste off in a warm shower and you will feel renewed and refreshed.
