If you work on anything that has a dirty grease, like automotive projects, then you know that getting the grease off your hands can be a task. You can make your own grease removing abrasive soap to have on hand the next time you tackle one of those projects. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Melt and pour soap base
  • Pulverized pumice
  • Microwave safe container, preferably a large measuring cup
  • Spoon to stir soap base
  • Plastic wrap
  • Essential oil
  • Soap mold
  • Old soap bits
  • Grater
  • Cookie sheet or pan to dry grated soap
  • Mortar and pestle or something to pulverize the soap
  • Bowl
  • Borax
  • Turpentine
  • Jar with a lid

  1. Make Bar Grease-Removing Abrasive Hand Soap

      Chop up 3/4 pound of melt and pour soap base and put it into a microwave-safe container. It's best to use a large glass measuring cup for ease later.

      Cover the container with plastic wrap and put it into the microwave. Melt it on high for one minute.

      Remove the melted melt and pour base and stir to incorporate any unmelted pieces. You should have a container of liquid when this is done.

      Mix in 2 to 3 tablespoons of thoroughly pulverized pumice. Add a few drops of essential oils if you wish the soap to have a fragrance and mix thoroughly.

      Pour into the mold, being careful not to form air bubbles. Allow your soap to dry and cool for several hours and unmold your abrasive hand soap. Wrap it to keep it from drying out.

    Make Paste Grease-Removing Abrasive Hand Soap

      Grate bits and pieces of old soap until you have enough for one cup.

      Dry the grated soap in the oven with the pilot light if it's gas, or on the lowest possible temperature if it's electric. The times vary depending upon your particular oven. Get it dry enough so that the soap gratings will easily pulverize.

      Pulverize the soap to a powder.

      Mix the pulverized soap with 1 cup of borax and 1 1/2 tsp. of pulverized pumice. Add 2 tsp. of pure turpentine and 1 1/2 tsp. of essential oil.

      Work the ingredients together. It will be thick, and you may have to use your hands. Make certain that there are no lumps left and put the mixture into a container that seals securely, yet allows the paste to be easily accessible to dirty hands.
