The duties of a teacher assistant involve providing aid to the head teacher in a classroom. If you wish to become a teacher assistant, there are some steps you can take to secure a job.

From Quick Guide: Teacher's Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Graduate high school. You need to finish high school before attempting to get a teacher assistant job. Very few organizations are going to hire a teacher assistant who did not finish secondary school.

  2. Step 2

Attend college. Although you usually do not need a degree to become a teacher assistant, many schools are going to want a student that went to college for at least two years.

  3. Step 3

Consider your enjoyment of working with children. A teacher assistant should have experience with children.

  4. Step 4

Study a foreign language. Bilingual teacher assistants are in high demand and are likely to be considered over a person who only speaks one language.

  5. Step 5

Take a state or county assessment exam. Many school districts are now requiring that teacher assistants complete an entry exam before being considered for a position. The test is typically used to gauge a person's general knowledge.

  6. Step 6

Receive on-the-job training. Many of the skills that you need to become a teacher assistant occur once you secure a position. The teacher that you are working with will show you all that you need to know about the job.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have experience working with special-needs children, you are likely to be considered over other candidates as well.
  • You can find teacher assistant jobs at local elementary schools, daycare centers, preschools and churches.
