A tie is the one way a man can dress up a suit and show a little of his personality. You can wear the same suit every day of the week, but no one would know as long as you change the tie and shirt. Follow these steps to buy a tie for work.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to a men's clothing store or a store with a men's department. Look for the area with dress shirts and pants. This is where you'll find most ties.

  2. Step 2

Look around at the selection. Ties come in all colors and designs. You can get bright colors, pastel colors, black and white ties or iridescent ties. Designs include the classic stripes, circles, checks or solid colors.

  3. Step 3

Know that the typical length of a tie is 52 to 58 inches. The width is 3 1/4 inches. If you're taller or shorter, you'll have to tie it accordingly to increase or decrease the length.

  4. Step 4

Focus on whether a tie matches the shirts and suits you plan to wear to work. You need a tie to compliment the overall look, not to stand out too much.

  5. Step 5

Choose a darker shade tie to go with a lighter colored shirt. You don't want the tie to be so light that it fades into the color of your shirt. Likewise, if it's too dark, it may clash.

  6. Step 6

Pay attention to the tie's quality. High-end ties are cut across the fabric. Make sure it's made of polyester or silk-polyester blend.

  7. Step 7

Look over the tie closely for snags or loose ends. You want to make sure it's of high quality.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask a salesperson for help if you're having trouble buying a tie. That's what they're there for.
  • Order a custom tie if you need a longer or shorter length.
  • Avoid wild designs or colors. They're not appropriate for work.
