Step 1
Learn something about your counselor before you open up about your sex problems. Find out their philosophies and feelings about sex and make sure they mesh with your own.
-
Step 2
Be honest with the counselor. Don't hide any facts or make the problem seem less than it is. The counselor can't help you if they don't know the whole story.
-
Step 3
Describe other issues you may have beyond the sexual. Some sex problems stem from emotional or mental issues that affect sexuality.
-
Step 4
Have your partner go with you to the sex therapist. If you're in a committed relationship, both of you should attend sessions so the therapist can discuss sex problems you both have.
-
Step 5
Complete all exercises or assignments the counselor gives you. Sex therapy involves at-home exercises you do, and then you can discuss how those exercises made you feel. This can help the counselor pinpoint any problems.
