Hook the turntable up to your computer by either hooking the turntable up directly to the computer or using a phono pre-amplifier to hook the turntable up to your computer.

Use a soft cloth to wipe any dust and debris off your LP. The cleaner you can get your LP, the higher quality MP3 you will get when you do the conversion.

Open the Audacity software, which is a free download from the Audacity website, and choose "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu.

Set the preferences necessary to do the conversion by choosing the software you would like to use to playback the recording under "Playback Device," choosing your turntable as the "Recording Device" and selecting "2 (Stereo)" as the "Recording Channel."

Press the "Record" button (the red dot) on the main Audacity screen and place your clean turntable needle on your LP. As the LP is being recorded, you will see waves go across the screen.

Stop the recording by pressing the Stop (yellow square) button on the main Audacity square and save the file by choosing the "File" menu and selecting "Save Project As."

Polish the audio if needed using the Audacity "Effect" menu, and then convert the recording to a WAV file. You can later use this file to turn into an MP3 file using your normal audio recording software.
