If you own property, you must pay property taxes. These are collected by the state you live in on an annual basis. Many people make decisions on where to live or retire based on the taxes levied in that state, and property tax must be an important part of that consideration. Compare property taxes from state to state to make a smart choice. Read on to learn how to compare property taxes by state.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research the state that you are considering. You can go online or you can write to that state government and request that they send you property taxes information. Be sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope to be sure they send the information to you.

  2. Step 2

Decide what county of that state you want to live in. Also decide if you will live in the city or county and which one. Property taxes are decided locally even though they are collected by the state.

  3. Step 3

Send for the property taxes information in the city or county you have determined to be best suited for you. You can go online once you know what city or county and check public records for that area online.

  4. Step 4

Check Retirement Living (see resource section) for a list of all states and general property taxes information to compare the different states further.

  5. Step 5

Make your informed decision after you have processed all of the information. Don't forget to compare other types of taxes, such as state income tax and state sales tax, to make the best decision possible.
