Flaunt your credentials as a journalist. Since its inception in 1943, Fashion Week has been an industry-only event, open to fashion professionals, journalists and celebrities. If you have any connections with designers, merchandisers, buyers or the media, get your application in for the event via sponsor IMG World. Find submission information on the contact page of the Fashion Week official site.

Plan in advance. Visit the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week website for scheduled events. Book a hotel. Hotels in midtown Manhattan fill up quickly when special events like Fashion Week are scheduled, so get your reservations in early.

    • 3

Volunteer for Fashion Week. If you live in New York or know you'll be in town during Fashion Week, contact the volunteer recruiter for a chance to see the supermodels and celebs for free. Of course, you'll have to do PR work, answer phones or help organizers coordinate shows, but you'll get a sneak peek at designs by Calvin Klein, Betsey Johnson, Anna Sui and others.

Look out for stars. At Fashion Week in September 2007, Posh Spice, Lisa Marie Presley and Demi Moore were among celebrities attending the event. Whether they're watching the supermodels strut their stuff or doing it themselves, celebrities have become a major part of Fashion Week.

Learn about the companies exhibiting their fashions. Sure, the glitzy designers and celebs get most of the attention, but accessory companies like BCBG, Max Azria and Swarovski also exhibit their goods, often at other locations throughout the Fashion District.
