The zigzag cross stitch is a variation that is a cross stitch that has double straight stitches on both the right and left sides. This stitch is usually stitched on just one square of Aida fabric, but it can also be stretched across two squares for an interesting look. Follow the steps below to stitch the zigzag cross stitch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Thread your tapestry needle with your choice of color in embroidery floss and tie a small knot at the bottom of your working thread, so the first zigzag cross stitch you stitch will be secured from the back of the Aida fabric.

  2. Step 2

Bring the threaded needle up at the lower left corner of the first square from which you want to start a row of zigzag cross stitches or complete a single zigzag cross stitch.

  3. Step 3

Insert the threaded needle into the upper left corner of the same square to form an upright stitch.

  4. Step 4

Come up with the threaded needle in the upper right corner of the same square, and insert it back into the lower left corner to form a half stitch.

  5. Step 5

Push the threaded needle up through the lower right corner of the square, and insert it into the upper left corner to form the second half stitch.

  6. Step 6

Bring the threaded needle up at the bottom right corner, and then insert it into the upper right corner to form a second straight stitch.

  7. Step 7

Complete two more straight stitches going from the bottom left corner to the upper left corner and then one from the bottom right corner to the upper left corner. The second set of straight stitches should lay right next to the first set of straight stitches. This completes the zigzag cross stitch, and you can secure the stitch and snip your thread.
