Step 1
Be good at getting on base. This is the leadoff hitter's most important task. Whether it's hitting for high average, drawing walks or trying to get hit by pitches, do whatever it takes to get on first base.
-
Step 2
Try to see as many pitches as possible, especially in your first at-bat. You want your team to see everything the pitcher has so they'll know what to look for in the game. You can also get the pitcher tired and more likely to make a mistake.
-
Step 3
Be a great baserunner. This is more than just stealing bases. It means running out ground balls, advancing yourself on another batter's out, taking the extra base on a hit, and being able to score from second base.
-
Step 4
Learn to bunt. This lost art is important for the top of the order. Not only might you be needed to advance a runner late in the game, but bunting can also be a sneaky way to get a hit for a fast runner.
-
Step 5
Be a pest. The best leadoff hitters can get in their opponents' heads during the game. Foul off good pitches at the plate, take bold leads off first base--anything to make them think about you and not focus on the game.
